Wildlife officers rescued an injured manatee at Everglades National Park in Florida immediately after park site visitors documented looking at a “large object” floating in the drinking water, according to the Countrywide Park Provider.

The manatee experienced been struck by a motorboat and had air outside of its lungs inflating its upper body cavity, resulting in it to float lopsided, according to a May well 16 statement from Everglades National Park.

The manatee was owning problem swimming, diving and feeding, which authorized “excessive” algae and barnacles to grow on its system.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fee worked with park rangers to capture and transport the manatee to SeaWorld’s maritime mammal veterinary care center for procedure, in accordance to the park assistance.

“The manatee has created good progress to recovery,” the statement says. “Though its lungs are nonetheless therapeutic and its floating is a bit off-kilter, it has cleared the barnacles and the extreme algae growth that accumulated because of to mobility problems.”

Also referred to as “Sea Cows,” manatees can are living up to 65 years in captivity and can grow about 13 ft very long and weigh 3,500 pounds. They can be found in the rivers, coastal waters and springs of Florida, wildlife officers report.

“Some Florida manatee are known to journey up the jap coastline into Georgia, the Carolinas, and a couple vacation as far north as Massachusetts all through heat months,” according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Fee. “In the Gulf, Florida manatees can be found west by coastal Louisiana and are occasionally sighted as much west as Texas. Prior to winter’s coldest months, manatees migrate to warm water habitats in Florida.”
